Honoring a Legacy
Paul and Katie Buttenwieser and the Family-to-Family Project
Celebrating Hope honors the legacy of Paul and Katie Buttenwieser
and their lifelong mission work preventing family homelessness. Their commitment to this mission lives on through many of
their philanthropic endeavors. The inaugural presentation of the Buttenwieser Awards at Celebrating Hope
will recognize those individuals carrying forward the commitment to keeping families together, safe, and in their homes. Founded in 1988, the
Family-to-Family Project supports families who are losing or have lost their homes by providing timely, innovative, and flexible
grants that help find or retain housing--and restore hope. Paul and Katie Buttenwieser developed the idea for the Family-to-Family Project after reading
Jonathan Kozol's Rachel and Her Children, a gripping account of life in a neglected New York City hotel shelter.
Moved and motivated, the Buttenwiesers called their friends and neighbors, hoping to bring them together to help prevent
family homelessness in their community. With their unwavering support, this small but dedicated group has grown into a thriving
network of 1,000 donor families, community partners, philanthropists, and civic leaders serving all of Massachusetts.
